Bounded Cohomology and Combings of Groups

چکیده
We adopt the notion of combability of groups defined in [Ghys2]. An example is given of a combable group which is not residually finite. Two of the eight 3-dimensional geometries, e Sl2(R) and H ×R, are quasiisometric. Three dimensional geometries are classified up to quasiisometry. Seifert fibred manifolds over hyperbolic orbifolds have bicombable fundamental groups. Every combable group satisfies an exponential isoperimetric inequality. Central extension of Z by hyperbolic surface groups are biautomatic. Central extensions of Z by finitely presented C(1/4)–T(4) groups are biautomatic. Examples of group cohomology classes are produced all of whose cocycle representatives grow exponentially or superexponentially. Higher dimensional integral Heisenberg groups satisfy a quadratic weak isoperimetric inequality. A cohomology theory based on bounded valued cocycles is introduced for groups satisfying finiteness conditions to detect isoperimetric inequalities.

Combings of Groups and the Grammar of Reparameterization
A new construction of combings is used to distinguish between several previously indistinguishable classes of groups associated to the theory of automatic groups and non-positive curvature in group theory. We construct synchronously bounded combings for a class of groups that are neither bicombable nor automatic. The linguistic complexity of these combings is analysed: in many cases the languag...
متن کاملStraight thin combings
We introduce a class of thin combings and prove that it has a nice behaviour in free constructions. Among corollaries, we deduce the relative metabolicity of Sela’s limit groups. S. Gersten defined the property of metabolicity for finitely presented groups (or even, contractible spaces with bounded geometry in dimension 2) as an attempt of an algebraic approach of word-hyperbolic groups [8] [9]...
متن کاملCombing Nilpotent and Polycyclic Groups
The notable exclusions from the family of automatic groups are those nilpotent groups which are not virtually abelian, and the fundamental groups of compact 3-manifolds based on the Nil or Sol geometries. Of these, the 3-manifold groups have been shown by Bridson and Gilman to lie in a family of groups defined by conditions slightly more general than those of automatic groups, that is, to have ...
متن کاملCohomological Lower Bounds for Isoperimetric Functions on Groups
If the finitely presented group G splits over the finitely presented subgroup C, then classes are constructed in H2 (∞) (G) which reflect the splitting and which serve as lower bounds for isoperimetric functions for G. It is proved that H2 (∞) (G) = 0 for all word hyperbolic groups G. A converse is obtained for the combination theorem for hyperbolic groups of Bestvina-Feighn. The Mayer-Vietoris...
متن کاملThe Second Bounded Cohomology of an Amalgamated Free Product of Groups
We study the second bounded cohomology of an amalgamated free product of groups, and an HNN extension of a group. As an application, we show that a group with infinitely many ends has infinite dimensional second bounded cohomology.
